Yelena has just confessed to murder and is faced with a choice, to be hung or to take the job of the commander’s new food tester. When she feels that living is a better path then being hung, Yelena leads a whole new life full of lies, betrayal, mystery and romance. When the father of the man she killed stays at the fortress she and the handsom Valek must save the day and the entirety of ixia as the enemy begons to take over. It is then that Yelena is forced to face her past and confront  her demons.

I would recommend this book to girls aged 13+ as it is a mature read with details of violence as well as other issues. Once you get into this book (which is not a difficult thing to achieve) then I can garantee that you will not be able to put it down. For those who are fed up with  fanasty and find it hard to believe then you will still be able to read it as allthough it breaches on the magic front, the way that the author has written this book makes it utterly believable.

There will be two more books in the Yelena Zaltana series, the second being Magic study and the third Fire study. I cannot find any fault with this book and cannot wait for the sequels.
