poppy.jpg

Amber had to get away from her home, her mum, her step sister (Poppy), She had to start a new life! When Amber arrives, its not as she had expected, She finds it hard to get a job, the other house mates think she’s timid, anxious and wet and she can’t bring her self to tell her mum and Poppy that she had planned to stay in Cornwall forever.

The longer She stays there, the more on the edge she feels, she thinks she’s loosing it, going mad, she senses things, her bedroom window rattles at night. The attics above her room are full of ancient Victorian and Edwardian furniture, including a antique rocking chair which rocks back and forth throughout the night, above Ambers head. Amber can’t bare the eerie elderly who lives at number eleven, she stands outside the student house and gives abnormal speeches to all of the lodgers in the house, Including Amber!

One day, Amber falls ill with tonsillitis and every-thing becomes too much for her, she feels she can no longer handle it.After awakening in hospital Amber found her mum and Poppy had come down to check on her due to her illness. However, once Amber had recovered and left the hospital, Poppy did not return home with their mum, she remained in
17 Merrel Road with Amber and the other Student lodgers.Poppy moved into the far attic the one of which the antique rocking chair was present in. At first, Everything went well, it was a welcoming atmosphere, welcoming poppy. However, Poppy turned up-side down, became un-controllable, un-bareable. She became the woman who had lived in that very attic room in which poppy had moved into. She was now Ivy Skinner!

I thought this book was a thrilling, enjoyable, engrossing read. The best book i have read for a long time. I could not put it down, Kate (the writer) Really made me feel as though I were Amber, Which really engaged me.
I would recommend this book to any-one who likes a grasping teen horror!

My Rating: *****= 5/5

stayout.jpg

Stay Out of the Basement is the second book in R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series. Dr. Brewer has been acting strangely, spending nearly all his time in the basement of his house, working on his plant experiments. He had warned his children, Margaret and Casey, to stay out, but they ignore him and sneak in to find huge plants. They begin to worry even more when Margaret finds that her father has been eating plant food, sleeping on a layer of dirt, and bleeding green blood. After his baseball cap is knocked off to show leaves growing from his head, Dr. Brewer explains that he is working with genetic engineering, in order to create a plant or animal hybrid.

Eventually Margaret and Casey return to the basement and find another Dr. Brewer experiment hidden in the closet. The siblings and their mother learn that the “Dr. Brewer” they’ve been living with for some time is actually a nearly perfect plant or human clone of the real Dr. Brewer. The clone, along with most of the plants, are destroyed by the real Dr. Brewer with an axe, while a few of the normal plants are moved into the garden. In the final twist, one of these plants speaks to Margaret, claiming that it is the real Dr. Brewer, but this part is left on a cliff-hanger.

The Cunning Man by Celia Rees. Review by Morgan 8c

cunning.jpg

In this story that combines sea legends, ghosts, and frightening nightmares. The story of Finn and her summer by the sea is an edge-of-your-seat tale. the two main characters, Finn and Mike, are two very different characters that Celia Rees brings to life with imaginative descriptions. Her depiction of Finn’s fear upon waking from terrifying dreams adds beautifully to the eerie atmosphere of this story. At times spine-tingling, this tale gives way to an endearing example of first love and supernatural powers upon the freakish storms in the story.

Finn is not sure about the salt house as it brings her fears of drowning to life. are the legends of the house true? is there really a ghost who wants revenge? when Finn finds out about the maker of the salt house she wonders if he is the reason why water keeps on appearing, out of no-where, on to her bedroom floor. her two brothers find some very weird items on the beach and wonder if they are the bones of those lost at sea.

Celia Rees is a wonderful author and her stories are mild horror, I would of preferred the book a bit more if she had made it a little more scary!

Demon Thief by Darren Shan. Review by Naveen 8C

demonthief.jpg

I have read the book Demon Thief by Darren Shan. As we all know, Darren Shan is a great horror writer and targets his book for young teenagers. Demon Thief is about a person called Cornelius Fleck (or also known as Kernel) and the adventures he has while getting his brother Art (or Artery) back from the evil hands of Cadaver and Lord Loss.

Cornelius is a man who sees strange shapes floating in the air, from which he can make portals out of. Cornelius follows something when he opens the window one night and disappears. A few days later, he comes back with his younger brother, Art. Cornelius meets a woman who sees the same floating shapes as him. But later, she attacks and explodes. A portal is made, from which Cadaver comes through with four disciples. Much to Cornelius’ distress, Art is kidnapped.

Cornelius later learns that the leader of the disciples, Beranabus, is a magician and that he, Nadia, Sharmila and Raz are looking for a piece of the Kah Gash. The Kah Gash is a weapon that could destroy the demon universe. They thought that Cadaver knew where it was. While they were chasin Cadaver, the group arrived on a demon planet, and in a battle, Raz was killed. Cadaver set a trap and forced Nadia and Cornelius to run away. After Nadia and Cornelius are rejoined with Beranabus, Nadia swears to kill Beranabus, but he was not very bothered.

They continued to follow Cadaver until they reached the castle were Lord Loss was. They entered, and found Lord Loss with Cadaver, holding onto Art. Loss tells the group that in order for them to get Art back, they will have to give up a member of their group. Loss chooses Nadia. He then makes her explode.Lord Loss tells the rest of the group that on an ancient chess board, their souls will be sealed inside. Cornelius has three guesses to find who the real kidnapper was, who stole Art. If he guesses correctly, then everyone could go home, including Art.

On his first guess, Cornelius thinks that it is Cadaver. Lord Loss says that it is incorrect. Then he thinks that the real thief was Lord Loss, but again he was wrong. With one chance left, Cornelius sees a demon child. Realizing it is a clue, he finally finds out who the real thief is: himself! After everyone is releases from the board, Lord Los tells them who the demon child was. It was called Artery.Loss told them that he found Art outisde the castle, caught him, transformed him to look like a regular child, and shortened his name to Art. Cornelius decides to leave Art behind, and returns home, heartbroken. When he goes home, things got even wprse. He had been gone for seven years, and Cornelius’ parents had got used to living without their children. Cornelius decides he cannot stay with them anymore, and goes to Beranabus. While talking to Beranabus, Cornelius realizes that the piece of Kah Gash must be with him!

I really enjoyed reading this book because Darren Shan described the characters very well. I would recommend this book to everyone.

This adventurous horror book is situated in the land of Elyon, a kingdom encircled by a 42 foot high wall, home to the towns Bridewell, Lunenburg, Turlock and Lathbury. But what is this enormous wall protecting? This summer, 12-year-old Alexa Daley is determined to discover what hidden secrets really lurk behind this inconvenient barricade of a wall. The well-known and mysterious Warvold’s death will affect Alexa and the kingdom of Bridewell for some time to come if nobody does anything to save the kingdom from the unknown intruders plotting right under the kingdom.

With her father, who is one of the mayors of the town, travels to Bridewell for his annual meeting with the other mayors while Alexa explores the town, determined this year, to find a way through to the other side of the wall.
Alexa was in luck, she discovered a key and cunningly found the hatch she unlocked and found the ancient secret tunnel leading under the land of Elyon, to the other side of the wall. Alexa discovers the thrills and threats of “the outside world” trailing her into seemingly impossible challenges to demolish the intruders who were plotting to destroy the land of Elyon, with the help of abnormal friends to guide her in this unknown territory. They knew that now that Warvold was dead, he was the only human that had knowledge of the devious intruders, the kingdom was far from safe, and Alexa was the only person who could save the land of Elyon…

I found this book really thrilling; however I could not see it in the horror genre, as I thought it suited well in the adventure genre. Patrick Carman really knows how to build up suspense, only giving you a few clues about the intruders, leaving you puzzled in some parts, desperately working out who is the person living in the town leading the intruders. I really enjoyed the book, and will definitely read the second book in the “land of Elyon” series, “Valley of Thorns”.

Shadowmancer by GP Taylor. Review by Ruth 8C

shadowmancer2.jpg

Shadowmancer is a book about a golden statue that is stolen from a tribe in
Africa. It is stolen by Demurrel who wants to use it to give himself ultimate power over the world. A boy from the African tribe, Raphah, follows Demurrel to
England and joins up with Thomas and Kate, who are villagers. Together they attempt to regain the statue before Demurrel can unleash its power, which is beyond his control.

Meanwhile, smuggler Jacob Crane had landed his ship and come across the three children hiding in the catacombs underneath Demurrel’s house. he helps them overcome the forces of Demurrel using his wit and weaponry, but will it be enough to overpower the demons sent to destroy them. This book moves at a satisfying pace and is left on a permanent cliff-hanger. I think that people who enjoy vivid descriptions and mystery and magic. I would recommend this to people in year eight and upwards, because of needing a to have a wide vocabulary.
